Backyard inspiration may come from all different sources. You may spot fences on other homes, through home renovation shows, or as part of the set design from your favorite movies and TV programs. A number of TV shows and movies have featured iconic fences which became more than just background decorations.

1. Home Improvement

The backyard fence on the classic Tim Allen sitcom was almost like a character all on its own. The character Tim Taylor would often stand alongside the fence as he sought out the wisdom from his neighbor Wilson. In all eight seasons of the show, the fence pretty much remained the same and appeared in almost every episode.

The fence was a tall wooden picket fence, sometimes referred to as a privacy fence. There were no spaces between the pickets and the wood was stained with a light color to add a natural look to the wood. Wilson's side of the fence often featured a framed design with support beams going across the top and bottom of the fence.

When you choose a wooden fence installation, you have the option to choose the type of stain you want. You may opt for a darker stain based on your own preferences.

2. Rugrats

A similar fence design to the "Home Improvement" fence is the wooden picket fence featured on the Nicktoon "Rugrats." The fence was a shorter picket design with no gaps and was used to keep the babies in the backyard.

As animation shifted and changed through each season, the fence would feature various design elements. One of the main features on many of the pickets was the solid board dog ear design. A "dog ear" design includes small angled cuts on the corners of each picket. The slight angles adds an aesthetically pleasing look so the pickets don't just go straight across.

Some of the fence designs in the backyard also featured large posts. The posts act as an anchor for the fence and help create a patterned look with even fence sections placed between each post.

3. Harriet the Spy

Along with Nicktoons like "Rugrats," Nickelodeon also produced a movie with an iconic fence in the form of "Harriet the Spy." One of the more memorable scenes in the movie is when Harriet and her friends visit the whimsical wind chime garden. The entryway to the recycled metal garden features an ornamental iron gate and fence.

The ornamental iron garden showcases how you can mix art and design into a fence that also provides privacy and security. The circular shapes and patterns create a symmetrical look to the exterior fence, but no one is able to squeeze through the open areas. The strength of the iron provides extra protection and will last through all types of weather.

4. Pixar's Up

For a classic white picket fence, look no further than the 2009 Pixar movie "Up." The short white fence features angled pickets which are evenly spread out along the whole fence perimeter. The fence features spaces between the pickets and a front gate in the center.

When you choose this fence design, you may choose a classic wood fence painted white or opt for a PVC vinyl fence design. The vinyl fence includes easy-to-clean pickets and you do not need to worry about rot, wear, or other weather elements. From afar, the vinyl fences look similar to wood and you can easily recreate the look of the "Up" house with the installation.
